Herb Chain

Director, Audit Committee Chair


Herb Chain currently serves as Senior Director in the Professional Standards Group at Marks Paneth LLP, a large regional accounting firm based in New York City. In his role, he is responsible for quality management and technical consulting on risk, accounting, auditing, and independence issues. Prior to this position, Herb was Assistant Professor at St. John’s University, where his primary focus was on SEC reporting, professional ethics, and enterprise risk management. (He remains an adjunct professor.) He is also principal and managing member of HMC Business Consulting, LLC, which provides consulting services relating to financial reporting, IPO readiness, internal controls, M&A due diligence and litigation support.

Herb spent 38 years with Deloitte (and predecessor firms), prior to mandatory retirement in May 2015. Herb served as audit partner for 27 years with Deloitte, specializing in the financial services industries, with a focus on the investment management subsector. Herb was a member of the firm’s professional practice network and also served as Deputy East Region Professional Practice Director.

He is a member of the board and audit committee chair of two public investment companies: The RENN Fund and Infusive US Trust, and a trustee of two nonprofit organizations: Qlarant, where he serves as chair of the audit and compliance committees, and The Kew-Forest School, an independent school in Forest Hills, Queens, where he serves as treasurer.

Herb received his BS degree in Marine Geology from Duke University in May 1974, and his MBA from the Wharton Graduate School of Business, University of Pennsylvania, in May 1977. He received an MS in Global Studies (International Relations) from New York University in 2007 and is the process of completing his DBA from the International School of Management.
