Herbert Chain


Herb Chain currently serves as Director at CBIZ Marks Paneth and Shareholder in Mayer Hoffman McCann, CPAs, a large accounting firm. In his role, he is responsible for quality management and technical consulting on risk, accounting, auditing, and independence issues.

Prior to this position, Herb was Assistant Professor at St. John’s University, where his primary focus was on SEC reporting, professional ethics, and
enterprise risk management. (He remains an adjunct professor.)
He is also principal and managing member of HMC Business Consulting, LLC, which provides consulting services relating to financial reporting, IPO readiness, internal controls, a due diligence and litigation support.
Herb spent 38 years with Deloitte (and predecessor firms), prior to mandatory retirement in May 2015.

Herb served as audit partner for 27 years with Deloitte, specializing in the financial services industries, with a focus on the investment management subsector. Herb was a member of the firm’s professional practice
network and served as Deputy East Region Professional Practice Director.
He is currently a member of the board and audit committee chair of two public companies, The RENN Fund and FRMO Corporation, and a trustee or director of three nonprofit organizations: Qlarant, where he serves as chair of the audit and compliance committee; The Warrior Connection, a nonprofit organization serving military veterans, where he serves as treasurer and finance committee chair; and The Kew-Forest School,
an independent school in Forest Hills, Queens, where he serves as treasurer and finance committee chair.

Herb received his BS degree in Marine Geology from Duke University in May 1974, and his MBA from the Wharton Graduate School of Business, University of Pennsylvania, in May 1977. He received an MS in Global Studies (International Relations) from New York University in 2007 and is the process of completing his DBA from the International School of Management.
